BLM Midi Out to normal midi sound module not BLM

Would I potentially come across any issues in theory using the MIDI OUT / BLM output for a normal midi module or is it configured only for the BLM when built to spec as per the build guide?

Should work just fine, as long as the receiving port doesn’t use any of the other pins, which it most likely won’t.

Ok cool! Thanks for confirming. I’m going to be setting up an EMU ESI4000 in multimode so this will help me take advantage of multiple channels. Cheers

Hawkeye, I just wanted to confirm, do I need to make up one of these cables to use the BLM port as a normal midi port?

@Drox yes, i think it could work - just try it out with a standard 5-pin MIDI cable, i think nothing too bad can happen 🙂.

If it does not work, you could try to modify the MIDI cable so that only the three bottom pins (2, 4, 5 on the OUT pin in the schematic above) are connected. But building the splitter is recommended - it’s the “cleaner” method with only the relevant MIDI data on their respective pins - and you gain an additional IN port 🙂.

If you never want to use the BLM port, solder in DIN5 sockets for both and then you get a MIDI in/out pair. By using 2x DIN8s, the in is mapped only to the BLM connector. If you want to use the fourth MIDI in and have 2x DIN8s soldered, then use the splitter cable as Peter linked. If you only want to use the out, then no splitter is required.
